Earth Day Clean-Up & Paint Party - April 21 10:00AM - 2:00PM

At Donigian Park on Valley Street we will be painting over graffiti and picking up litter. Along Kinsley Avenue we will be cleaning up the Woonasquatucket River. If you have waders please bring them, but if you don't want to go in the water there will be plenty of cleanup work to do along the banks. For more information contact Lisa at lisa@woonasquatucket.org. Hope to see you there!

Park Surveys

With your help, we have completed surveys of over 80 Providence parks! Several recurring problems have been identified and we're currently creating a report to the Providence Parks Department. You can help by filling out a survey for your neighborhood park. .

Friends Groups

Citywide Green is encouraging residents to start friends groups for their local parks. Funding is available through New England Grassroots (Citywide Green can help with the application). Parks with friends groups demand more attention! Join a friends group or start your own.

Conservation Commission

We are encouraging organizations to nominate highly qualified individuals to serve on the Providence Conservation Commission, which will create land use and zoning policies and plans that protect and enhance our natural resources. If you're interested in nominating someone, contact Lisa Aurecchia at lisa@woonasquatucket.org.

Arbor Day

Arbor Day is April 27th! The Rhode Island Tree Council is offering free saplings while supplies last for 2007 Arbor Day plantings. Planting trees in your local park provides shade and promotes a healthy park environment. Applications are available on the Rhode Island Tree Council website.

Making a Statement

Citywide Green is preparing comments on the recent Providence Tomorrow Charrettes to ensure that parks are a priority in the Comprehensive Plan. We are also developing a statement to oppose the proposed rebuilding of schools on park land. The city will hold community feed-back meetings in February, so come out and help protect our parks! The Providence Journal wrote an article about the plans to update the Providence school system. You can read the article here.

Neutaconkanut Hill Park

Citywide Green in partnership with the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council, Neutaconkanut Hill Association and the City of Providence is seeking volunteers to help blaze and maintain trails in Uplands at Neutaconkanut Hill Park. Since the summer, we’ve been working to open up the trails, expose rock outcroppings, historic foundations and rock walls, build bog bridges and improve vistas into downtown Providence. The Uplands of Neutaconkanut is the highest point in Providence and consist of 88 acres of open space adjacent to the town of Johnston. Fox, wild turkey and even deer have been spotted in this amazing city park.

We’re looking for volunteer groups and individuals to assist with these efforts. Volunteers should contact Lisa Aurecchia at 861-9046 or lisa@woonasquatucket.org for more information.

The trail map for the upland area has been created in PDF format. Click here to see it.
