About Us

Goals

The goals of Citywide Green are:

1. Maintain City parks and public spaces to the highest standards.

  1. Request the appointment of a senior policy position responsible for City environmental issues. This person will head up a Public Space Task Force, which should include the Directors of the Parks, Recreation, Planning and Public Works Departments, and the Mayor's office of Neighborhood Services. The task force shall meet quarterly with Citywide Green and community residents to address environmental, programming and maintenance issues.
  2. Promote community stewardship of public spaces in partnership with City maintenance.
  3. Identify individuals to be single points of contact in the Public Works, Parks and Recreation Departments who will be responsive to residents' concerns.

2. Develop a citywide plan for all public spaces and their programming and maintenance as an element of the Comprehensive Plan for Providence. Public spaces include parks, community gardens, natural areas, outdoor recreation areas, public squares, green buffers along paved areas, and greenways.

  1. Include public spaces as critical elements of healthy and economically viable neighborhoods.
  2. Identify opportunities to acquire and improve public spaces.
  3. Implement and enforce tree canopy goals as delineated in the Providence Zoning Ordinance.
  4. Require vegetated buffers of paved areas and planted traffic islands in every neighborhood and in every zoning designation.

3. Aggressively protect our natural resources.

  1. Request the appointment of a Providence Conservation Commission.
  2. Create land use and zoning policies and plans that protect and enhance our natural resources as assets in all of our neighborhoods.

4. Make public spaces accessible to everyone.

  1. Maximize use of public spaces through educational, environmental and recreational programming by public and private organizations.
  2. Make all parks safe and crime free areas.
  3. Create a regularly updated Providence Parks Department and Providence Recreation Department website with information about the location, facilities, programming, special events and rules for use of all parks and outdoor public spaces in Providence.
  4. Post park rules, program and event notices at every park in the City.
